Porthcawl Sprint Triathlon
Countdown to race day
750m Swim
The day begins on the historic harbour slipway as athletes gather on the water’s edge for a 750m open water swim in the sheltered waters of Porthcawl Harbour. Competitors head out onto a single anticlockwise lap of the harbour course, swimming beneath the watch of the lighthouse before returning to the slip and the short run into transition.
Taking place close to high tide, the course benefits from excellent water depth and the protection of the harbour walls, creating a swim that is both exciting and accessible. With sunrise over the Bristol Channel and Porthcawl’s maritime heritage all around, it provides a memorable start to the final race of the season.
22km Bike
Leaving transition, athletes head straight onto a fast and flowing four lap bike course through the streets of Porthcawl.
Featuring sweeping coastal roads, flowing turns and a short climb on each lap, the course rewards athletes who can maintain momentum and apply consistent power throughout. The compact lap format keeps competitors close together and ensures the race remains dynamic from start to finish.
Returning past the harbour at the end of each lap, athletes will pass through the centre of the event, surrounded by supporters, fellow competitors and the energy of race day. The compact circuit creates a unique atmosphere, allowing athletes to see the race develop around them while supporters enjoy repeated opportunities to cheer competitors on. Fast, engaging and spectator friendly, the course is designed to keep athletes connected to the action from the first pedal stroke to the final lap.
5km Run
The run course takes athletes along Porthcawl’s iconic seafront on a fast two lap route.
Starting from the harbour, competitors head west along the promenade, enjoying uninterrupted views across the Bristol Channel before returning towards the harbour and beginning their second lap. The multi-lap format creates a fantastic atmosphere, allowing athletes to draw energy from supporters throughout the race.
With a flat and flowing profile, the course provides the perfect opportunity to find your rhythm. The race finishes in the heart of Porthcawl Harbour, where athletes will return to the iconic checkerboard finish area surrounded by supporters, fellow competitors and the atmosphere of race day.
Finish Line
More than just a finish line, the Porthcawl Sprint Triathlon is designed as a celebration of the triathlon season. Whether you’re racing for a podium position, competing as part of a relay team, representing your club or simply aiming to cross the line with a smile, the finish area provides the perfect setting to share stories, celebrate achievements and enjoy one final race day experience before the season comes to a close.
With music, spectators, refreshments and the harbour as a backdrop, athletes can relax and soak up the atmosphere long after they have crossed the finish line.
